June 19, 1865 marked the day Union Army general Gordon Granger informed the people of Galveston, Texas that the enslavement of Black people had been abolished in the United States. Granger's general order stated: "The people of Texas are informed that, in accordance with a proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free."
The word "Juneteenth" is a combination of "June" and "nineteenth." The official Juneteenth Flag was created by activist Ben Haith in 1997. Learn about the meaning of each element of the flag here.
The Juneteenth Flag covering the map of the United States both symbolizes and celebrates the freedom of Black people all across the country. The statement "Freedom is a Human Right" emphasizes that Black people are human, and therefore deserve the right to freedom just as much as any other group of people.
